EEL 6935 -- Network Science and Applications
Suggested Topics for Projects
- Network sampling problems:
- Study the relationship among the number of sensors
needed, deployment positions of sensors, accuracy of event position
estimation, and event detection probability.
- Study how to deploy acoustic sensors so that the
probability of detecting vehicles/tanks is maximized.
- Study how to deploy acoustic sensors so that the
probability of detecting gunshots is maximized.
- Study how to deploy smoke sensors so that the
probability of detecting fire is maximized.
- Study how to deploy traffic monitors so that the
probability of detecting the locations of anomalies in communication networks
is maximized.
- Study how to deploy video cameras and microphones so
that the probability of detecting terrorist activities is maximized.
- Graph learning problems:
- Identify the topology of a gene regulatory network,
given micro-array data.
- Identify the topology of a social network, given
telephone records of a community, or messages in Internet chat-rooms.
- Identify the topology of a semantic network of
words/phrases, given text documents.
- Identify the topology of a brain network/connectome,
given fMRI or Brainbow images.
- Identification of Network Dynamics/Behaviors
- Identify the dynamics of stock prices and causal
relationship among the stock prices.
- Identify the dynamics of a brain network
- Application domains:
- Physical or engineered networks (e.g., power grid, and
transportation network)
- Information networks (e.g., Internet)
- Biological networks (e.g., brain network, gene
regulatory network, neural network)
- Logical/semantic networks (e.g., concept/topic
networks)
- Economic networks (e.g., stock market)
- Social networks
- Hybrid (e.g., information network & social network)
